2023 Winter HS Team Rules
CCSA HIGH SCHOOL SURFING TEAM CHALLENGE
COMPETITION FORMAT & RULES
FORMAT:
This is a 12 team format.
There are 3 divisions equaling approximately a 4 hour contest.
Each team roster is made up of a maximum of 16 High School students including 8 surfers, 4 girls, and 4 long boarders.
There will be 2 heats per division, with up to 6 teams surfing against each other in each individual heat.
Each contest consists of 3 divisions: Surfing, Girls Surfing, and Long boarding.
a. The Surfing division consists of two – 50 minute heats with up to 6 teams each. Each team has 4 contestants.
b. The Girls Surfing division consists of two – 25 minute heats with up to 6 teams each. Each team has 2 contestants.
c. The Long boarding division consists of two – 25 minute heats with up to 6 teams each. Each team has 2 contestants.
Of those 16 team members, only eight will compete in each contest: 4 surfers, 2 girls, and 2 Long boarders. Competitors are chosen by the coach from the team roster to compete in each contest.
This is a tag team format. When each surfer comes in they tag the next teammate in “the box”, a designated area in front of their team tent.
Each surfer can surf a maximum of 3 waves in their heat. The highest scoring wave is used from each surfer to calculate the team’s points for that heat.
Each team is to nominate a DOUBLE WHAMMY SURFER prior to the beginning of their respective heat. The DOUBLE WHAMMY SURFER is a team member pre-selected by their coach. His/ her points on their highest scoring wave shall be doubled.
If there is a tie on points at the end of the match, there will be a count back between tied teams and broken by the highest single extra wave score from their respective DOUBLE WHAMMY SURFER.
RULES:
Team surfers for each contest will be selected by the coach, and the team roster will be submitted prior to the start of every event.
Once each four-man or two-man heat roster is set, surfers must surf in turn, in set order.
Each surfer can catch up to three waves, but choose to catch only one and then return to the beach. Each surfer must catch at least one wave per heat.
Each surfer’s best wave will count towards the team total points.
At the end of the allotted heat time or when the surfer has completed his / her “set” the competing surfer is to return to the beach and enter the “box” area and tag the next surfer before the next team surfer can be released.
The beach referee in the “box” area will monitor compliance with the rules of each team member during change-over and tag.
There are point deductions for breaking the rules:
a. Tagging outside the box: Deduct 1 point.
b. If the team is not in the box at the end of the 50 minute heat: Deduct 5 points.
Each surfer can ride as many as three waves, but only one of them will count toward the team’s score. If a surfer feels he got a high-scoring wave right away, he can paddle in immediately, run to the beach where he tags the next teammate in the “box”. That teammate then paddles out, like a relay race. Each team has the 50 minutes for its four surfers to get a scoring wave. Each team has 25 minutes for its two girl surfers or two long boarders to get a scoring wave.
Once a team member has been placed in the designated heat they cannot be substituted back in that heat.
Surfers can only be interchanged between each surfing format at the start of a new contest (For example a surfer can compete as a long boarder or a girl surfer can compete in surfing).
The order of which teams will compete against each other will be determined prior by CCSA prior to start of contest.
At the end of the season, each coach will choose a team MVP to be awarded at the banquet.
Top three teams will receive team trophy to be awarded at the banquet.
TEAM PENALTIES:
Surfer competes out of turn: Loss of 5 points.
A surfer leaves early from the “box” area: Loss of 5 points.
If the final team member is not back in the “box” by the end of the heat: Loss of 5 points
RIDING AND PADDLING PENALTIES:
If a surfer’s wave is interfered, the highest wave of the interfering surfer will be halved.
Penalty points are deducted from the team match total.
